Ion Fiz: "You crossed the border between art and fashion"

"Dear David, I have a hard time writing this letter, it hurts because I have always admired and defended you in this sometimes banal and pathetic fashion world where anyone believes in being a god or a king rather than defending or supporting creation, even less if one is dedicated to design, to create signature fashion.

You were, you are and you will always be one of great in Spanish fashion and not just fashion; your humanity, personality, character, talent and irreverence made you an artist. A gift with which only a few are born; a genius that went beyond, crossing the border between art and fashion.

I remember the day we met as if it were yesterday. It was in Barcelona at the Circuit design festival in 2000 that I was able to witness one of your first collections: "Sans Titre", made up of garments designed from second-hand military uniforms on which you wrote with your left hand and in an almost magical manner, texts of your admired Joseph Beuys with your already famous and recognizable "Davidelfin" typography, I felt privileged to meet you, I knew I was in front of a genius, an artist. Four years later we met on the old Cibeles catwalk, where I was presenting my second collection in Madrid, and you were the first to call me on the phone and congratulate me for the L'Oreal award I was given. I thought: only a great man has that humanity, that fellowship, that attitude and I was right David because you stirred, uplifted and showed everyone that in our country there is talent and a lot of it, not only in art but also in the fashion.

The fate, lifestyle and frenetic pace of our profession made us not to be able to be close friends, but there was always companionship, admiration and respect between the two of us. You have been a leader of the Spanish fashion David, now begins your legend. Thank you for the great legacy you have given us, great among the great, we will never forget you. "
