09/01/2024

The Council of Ministers, at the proposal of the Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, approved today granting the Gold Medals for Merit in Fine Arts corresponding to the year 2023 to 37 cultural personalities and institutions. And among them is Modesto Lomba.

The Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts is a recognition that distinguishes outstanding people and entities in the field of artistic and cultural creation, or that have provided notable services in the promotion, development or dissemination of art and culture or the conservation of artistic heritage.

Modesto Lomba was born in Vitoria in 1962, and is one of the great in haute couture and ready-to-wear Spanish creators.

In 1987 he founded the firm Devota y Lomba together with architect José Luis Devota. This brand continued under his direction after Devota’s demise in 1993, and expanded its scope of action to include accessories, bridal wear as well as architecture and interior design projects. He has also created costumes for dance and theater, such as that of the Mediterránea National Lyrical Ballet, with choreography by Nacho Duato; the ballet ‘Poeta’, directed by Aida Gómez; or the play ‘Arte’, directed by Josep Maria Flotats. In 1998 he founded, together with other designers of his generation, the Asociación de Creadores de Moda de España, of which he has been president since 2000.
