Sybilla is participating, from February 13th to March 27th, in the exhibit Woven Vessels. A women’s perspective on Phoenician art, curated by Marta Valea (Caotics), will be on display at the Gandía Blasco gallery in Madrid.
The artist approaches the commission using her own methodology: if the proposal called for “woven vessels,” she responds with “fabric vessels.” These pieces are constructed as if they were dresses, where volume arises from weaving and manual processes rather than from a preliminary sketch.
Sybilla follows the same system she employs to develop her fashion collections. The sketch serves as an initial draft; but the actual work begins by modeling directly on the fabric. From there, forms evolve as they are worked on, an open-ended exploration that is only resolved when the piece finds its own equilibrium.
The works are presented as initial textile sketches: soft structures that explore volume, tension, and surface. They are a part of an exhibition that brings together diverse contemporary approaches to the Phoenician legacy through the work of female artists.
The exhibit may be visited in Madrid until March 27th.
