Teresa Helbig has been awarded the 2023 National Fashion Design Award as proposed by the jury today. This award, granted annually by the Ministry of Culture and Sports, is the highest award that merits fashion creators in Spain.
Unanimously, the jury wished to acknowledge the awardee’s “extensive career characterized by the fashion creator’s innovative drive as well as the artistic quality of her work from her origins in the family business."
Furthermore, the jury highlighted “her toils for the sake of training new professionals. The international relevance achieved by her work, her continuous dialogue with other arts and cultural industries, and especially her research work, updating and incorporating crafts into the most avant-garde lines of Spanish design make her worthy of this award ".
The Jury was chaired by Carmen Páez Soria, General Director of Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property and Cooperation and Carlo Penna Gómez, Deputy General Director of Promotion of Cultural Industries, who acted as Vice-president. As members of the jury; Helena López de Hierro D'Aubarede, Director of the Museo del Traje; the Ethnological Heritage Research Center (CIPE); Ángel Fernández Ovejero, 2022 National Fashion Design Award; María Dolores Dopico Aneiros, Director of the Master in Design and Creative Fashion at the University of Vigo; Enrique Andrés Ruiz, cultural critic; Inés Lorenzo Sarría, Head of Content, Vogue Spain; Alfonso Ohnur Espinosa, photographer; and Pepa Bueno Fidel, Executive Director of the Asociación de Creadores de Moda de España.
