Ángel Fernández Ovejero, National Fashion Design Award

24/05/2022

The creator from Santander, Ángel Fernández Ovejero, founder of the emblematic fashion firm Ángel Schlesser, today became the new recipient of the National Fashion Design Award, a recognition created in 2009 by the Ministry of Culture and Sports at the request of the Asociación de Creadores de Moda de España to reward the trajectory of the most outstanding professionals in the fashion sector.

In his ruling, the jury highlighted said creator’s thorough artistic and entrepreneurial career, which consolidated an aesthetic of pure and innovative lines making it internationally recognizable. Furthermore, the jury pointed out that “his work describes his regard to professional, contemporary women that is an example for the young generations of designers.”

Fernández Ovejero began his career with Juan Rufete. He founded his own brand, Ángel Schlesser, in 1983, becoming a benchmark for Spanish prêt-à-porter. The urban, minimalist and elegant character of his designs became an unmistakable hallmark of the fashion brand, one of the most recognized in Spanish design.

“Ángel was also one of the founding members of the Asociación Creadores de Moda de España, so we are extremely pleased with this recognition to the career of one of the great names in Spanish fashion history”, declares Modesto Lomba, president of ACME.

With this recognition, Fernández Ovejero becomes part of an illustrious list of awardees made up of: Manuel Pertegaz, Paco Rabanne, Elio Berhanyer, Manolo Bahnik, Amaya Arzuaga, Josep Font, Sybilla, David Delfín, Agatha Ruiz de la Prada, Miguel Adrover, Adolfo Domínguez, Ana Locking and Antonio Alvarado.
