Helena Rohner firm FAD Cup 2014

27/03/2014

Helena Rohner has been commissioned to design the commemorative cup for the ceremony of the Medals FAD 2014, which were awarded in Barcelona on March 17th.

The cup is made of ceramic by hand throwing, with a wooden base of Spanish walnut for which the designer was inspired by the Mediterranean. In the words of Helena Rohner, “the allegorical form of a breast, allows interaction with the object obliging the diner to hold it in its hand for use.”

The creator, from the Canary Islands, seeks to project with this design “an image of harmony and calm mixed with earth and nature.” The result being a creation of unbarred shapes, generous and humble.

The design by Helena Rohner becomes thus a part of the FAD Copoteca, which each year, since 1917, accounts with the selfless donation of a cup, the work of renown artists, designers and craftsmen and which are now exhibited on floor -1 of Design Hub Barcelona.

Among recent artists whom have collaborated with the creation of the cup for the FAD party are included, industrial designer Pete Sans in 2013 and the cocktail mixer Javier de las Muelas in the 2012 edition.

Currently chaired by Nani Marquina, the FAD is a private, independent, non-profit organization that was created to promote design and architecture within the economic, cultural and social spheres of Catalonia. From 1928 awards said medals in order to acknowledge individuals and organizations that have made valuable contributions to the social and cultural life of our country. The awardees of this edition were the promoters of the SOS T-shirts, Ensenyament Públic de Qualitat, the Institut del Teatre, Leopoldo Pomes, Quim Vila Vilade Viniteca and the suplement Cultura/s of La Vanguardia.
