The Asociación de Creadores de Moda de España (ACME) says goodbye to Dolores Cortes, founder of the firm that carries her name and a key player in the history of the textile industry in Spain, who passed away on Sunday. Her brand, from Valencia, has been reinventing swimwear for more than 70 years and will continue the designer’s legacy who pioneered in the 1950s the use of elastic fabric to create a swimsuit for the first time.
“It is with regret that we say goodbye to Dolores Cortés, a visionary who revolutionised swimwear. At 98 years old, she leaves us a legacy of creativity and entrepreneurial spirit,”states Modesto Lomba, president of ACME.
“A woman like Dolores Cortés, brave, pioneering, tireless worker, is an example for the entire sector. She has made a significant contribution to positioning Spanish designer fashion and we must be very proud to have enjoyed professionals like her. Her daughter, Dolores Font Cortés, continues with her work, cementing and expanding its relevance,” adds Pepa Bueno, executive director of the Association.
The Gold Medal for Merit at Work (2022) or the Award for Working Women from the Valencian Parliament (2003) are just some of the awards she received during her life. Among them, her appointment as Favorite Daughter of Vila-Real also stands out for her contribution to the social and economic development of the town, as well as for broadcasting and respecting its traditions.
A member of ACME since 2011, Dolores Cortés maintained a close relationship with its associates and participated in a large number of its initiatives. Among them, Madrid is Moda. The firm is consistent on the calendar of this event responsible for opening Madrid Fashion Week, where, through different presentations and happenings, it brings fashion proposals and the creative process of the designs closer to the public.
