The announcement was delivered by Model Laura Sánchez and Fashion Designer Juan Duyos, together with María Eizaguirre, Communication & Participation Director of RTVE. The great Spanish fashion festival will be held on June 13th. at the Teatro Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, with a red carpet to take place previously on the steps of the National Library.
“Today we announce the first nominees. This being a very special event as we are making history,” stated María Eizaguirre before the reading of the nominees. RTVE’s Communications Director clarified that the categories of Honorary and International Awards will be designated by the Foundation's Board of Trustees, and will be announced in the coming days.
Additionally, she presented the award statuette for the first time. Designed by Helena Rohner, the design “evokes That famous headdress by Cristóbal Balenciaga, being a tribute to the master. Made in white ceramic with a quartz bath and a walnut base, a suitable, elegant and light design,” she explained.
Modesto Lomba, fashion designer and President of the Fundación Academia de la Moda Española (FAME), highlighted the relevance of these awards for the fashion sector "the awards come from within the sector itself, to raise awareness and also to sketch, with the fashion sector’s consumer in mind, the project’s relevance, that they may understand a part of the inside work entailed in the creation of fashion.
“Today we read the first nominees. The winners are important, as also are the nominees as well as all those who have presented themselves for the awards. In the end someone has to win, but everyone who has presented themselves is a winner. Furthermore, this year we want to pay tribute to Cristóbal Balenciaga,” he explained.
Regarding the list of nominees, fashion designer Juan Duyos pointed out that it is “fair and beautiful”, and that the gala promises “to be very powerful.” Model Laura Sánchez expressed herself in the same sense, stating that “it was time for awards like this to be celebrated”: “For those of us who work in fashion, the real prize is being able to work every day. And that all the fashion sectors are recognised is fantastic,” she added.
The nominees of the eight categories have been selected by the vote of 129 Founding Academics of the Fundación Academia de la Moda Española (FAME), thus paying tribute to the legacy of the great master Cristóbal Balenciaga, who in 2024 would be 129 years old. The vote of these outstanding professionals will also decide this year's winners, a result that will be announced at the gala. The two remaining categories, the Honor Award and the International Award, will be designated directly by the FAME Board, and revealed in the coming days. In these ten award categories, the Fundación Academia de la Moda Española (FAME) has valued the careers and other creative, business and technical aspects of the actors who make up Spain’s fashion universe. The entire voting process has been validated before a notary in compliance with the published bases.
The jury has selected the 40 nominees from more than 400 entries, a great success of the call and a reflection of the emotion and interest with which the industry has received this initiative. The awards are a long standing demand of the fashion sector that has become a reality, a recognition of the enormous work carried out by each of its players.
An event designed to place fashion within Spanish society as a cultural and creative industry that must be supported, one of the best ambassadors of Spain’s country brand.
Organised by FAME together with RTVE, the Fundación de la Academia Española de la Moda Awards, were created to recognise Spanish fashion talents and enhance said recognition within Spain as well as beyond its borders. The Awards are designed to give visibility and dignify all the professions that make up the extensive fashion value chain where the sector itself awards and distinguishes the best works or initiatives, two characteristics that make these Fashion Awards unique.
All the creative projects and proposals have been presented or developed throughout 2023.
Helena Rohner has been responsible for creating the award statuette that the winners will receive during the gala. A handmade sculpture inspired by the movement of fabrics and the hats and headdresses of Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the master's hallmarks. Specifically, it is inspired in one of his iconic bridal headdresses. The ten pieces are made of ceramic, have a layer of liquid quartz to protect them and rest on a Spanish walnut base. The names will be hand engraved on a brass plate.
Model Nieves Álvarez, host of TVE program 'Flash Moda', will host the gala, and RTVE journalists Elena S. Sánchez and Rafa Muñoz will present the special program prior to the award’s red carpet. The gala will be broadcast live from 10:00 p.m. on channel La 2, TVE Internacional and RTVE Play, and the previous red carpet can be followed live on RTVE Play from 7:30 p.m.
The Fundación de la Academia de la Moda Española Awards will have two settings full of symbolism: the National Library of Spain, with its emblematic staircase for the development of the red carpet, and the Teatro Fernán Gómez Centro Cultural de la Villa, the gala’s headquarters, remembering that 40 years ago, above the theatre, in Plaza Colón, the first Madrid catwalk took place.
This edition of the Awards enjoys the support of the Ministry of Culture, responsible for permitting the use of the National Library, and Madrid Capital de Moda, an initiative of the government area of Economy, Innovation and Finance of Madrid City Council, who opened the doors of the Fernán Gómez Theater Centro Cultural de la Villa for the celebration of the gala.
The Awards are also possible thanks to the official sponsor of the Fundación Academia de la Moda Española, L'Oréal Paris, who celebrates female empowerment and 25 years supporting Spanish fashion, and the collaboration of Multiópticas, committed to Spanish fashion with its MÓ TV, Don Julio Tequila, the gala’s official drink, and Sala Gabana, where the after party will take place.
Created in 2020, the Fundación Academia de la Moda Española is a non-profit organisation promoted by the Asociación de Creadores de Moda de España (ACME) to ensure the recognition, promotion and future development of Spanish fashion. The granting of these annual Awards is one of its priority objectives in the first phase of its path.
