Leandro Cano designs for Madrid’s Teatro Español

29/10/2018

Leandro Cano has designed the costumes for the play ‘Los Cuerpos Perdidos’ – “The Lost Bodies” –  a theatre-dance and musical creation produced by Madrid’s Teatro Español that premieres on November 1st. The representation was winner of the XVIII SGAE Theatre Award in 2009 and is directed by the multidisciplinary creator Carlota Ferrer and written by José Manuel Mora Ortiz.

The designer from Jaén has created a total of 16 designs that reflect the harshness and heart-breaking plot of the work. Rape, torture and death are represented through the designer’s eyes and expressed in volumes, prints and ornamentations. As usual in the designer’s collections, knitted garments have a special role as well as hand-woven wrestler masks, which hide the guilt of some of the characters.

For this project, Leandro Cano has designed for the first time for men. Pieces that will be worn by actors and actresses of the likes of Verónica Forqué, Julia de Castro, Conchi Espejo, Paula Ruíz, David Picazo, Cristóbal Suárez, José Luís Torrijo, Jorge Suquet, Carlos Beluga and Guillermo Weickert.

Leandro Cano participated for the first time in the EGO platform of Madrid Fashion Week in 2012 and months later he was selected to show at  Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin as a finalist of “Designer for Tomorrow” contest. The creator is committed to sustainable and responsible production, as well as the use of natural fibres such as wool. His work in this regard earned him the nomination to the International Woolmark Prize of 2016. In 2017 he was proclaimed winner of Who’s on Next of Vogue Spain, which featured journalist Suzy Menkes and designer Alber Elbaz as members of the jury.
