A contemporary tribute to Ndbele art

22/09/2025

Dolores Cortés presented her collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, inspired by the rich cultural and visual heritage of Ndebele art, which originates from Southern Africa. The collection reinterprets its aesthetic codes with a modern and sophisticated approach, translating its graphic language into the universe of swimwear. More than just a swimwear line, this collection is a tribute to female creativity and the design’s ability to transcend beyond purely decorative elements.

The inspiration stems from the vibrant legacy of Ndebele murals and their geometric patterns, transformed into large-scale prints on swimsuits conceived as canvases. The design plays with symmetry, scale, and color contrasts, translating traditional African color palettes into a range that alternates vibrant tones with metallic nuances. The result is an aesthetic that celebrates movement, visual energy, and the cultural strength of a reinterpreted heritage.

Regarding materials, the collection features lurex finishes that add luminosity and sensuality, evoking sunlight’s reflections on the water. Hand-embroidered organic motifs, inspired by symbols of protection and fertility, add texture and emotional depth, connecting the garment to an ancestral memory. The color palette combines terracotta and leaf green with triads of ivory and black, along with intense accents of indigo blue.

This collection stands as a cultural and aesthetic statement: a fusion of tradition and modernity that celebrates the body, art, and the transformative power of fashion.
